What Is Lupus Nephropathy?
Lupus nephropathy is an immune-mediated kidney disease caused by systemic lupus erythematosus. Immune complexes deposit in the kidney’s filtering units (glomeruli), triggering inflammation and structural damage.
Common kidney-related features include:
- Protein leakage in urine
- Blood in urine
- Rising serum creatinine
- High blood pressure
- Swelling of face, legs, or body
Kidney involvement can occur early or later in the course of lupus and requires specialized care.
